How Young Can You Teach A Child To Play the Piano?

Updated: Dec 1, 2021

Noah, 4, and Marc, 3, practicing forte and piano

All children are different, but generally speaking, children as young as three and a half have the developmental ability to successfully learn to play the piano with a curriculum tailored to this early age range. Sounds young, right? Actually, in many Western European and Asian countries, an early start isn't uncommon at all.

How can you measure if your young child is ready for piano lessons? First, your child will need to know their alphabet letters A through G. There's no need to know how to write the letters, but there is a foundational requirement in being able to identify the first seven letters of the alphabet. After that, are they able to stay engaged for 20 minutes to complete a task such as an arts and crafts project or listening to a book? You, as the parent, will know your child best, and if you have reason to believe they may be ready to try out piano lessons, then most likely they are, in fact, ready. Before you spend time and money on private lessons, you can download and print the first three lessons of the Junior Prodigy Music piano curriculum to guage for yourself at home the interest level of your child and whether or not you think your child is ready.

Tip: You can follow along with free accompanying videos or if you have musical knowledge, you can go at it on your own.
